Completed Counseling and Short Stay Home for WED Trust

I write you as a volunteer staying for one month in Chellampatti visiting WED Trust. I’m Swiss and studying law in the sixth semester at the University of St.Gallen. Every day I learn more about their interesting work and I’m very impressed about the great variety of their projects and also about the achievements through their engagement. Now I write you to tell about the finish of the Short Stay House. The WED Trust Team told me, that this was only possible to be build with your generous donation. I was very happy when I heard this and I made some pictures of the house to show you how it looks like. You will find the document with the pictures attached, I hope you will like it as well as I do. Ms. Logamani and Mr. Dharma Neethi as well as the whole staff of WED Trust are looking forward to move in it soon.
WED Trust reached a total found of RS 1’257’399.00, which is fully used for the construction of the house. The building will be completed with a car shed to keep safety their four wheelers and two wheelers, for which WED Trust still needs RS 100’000. This car shed could also be used for public meetings. On the first floor there are three rooms. One will be used for the staff, one as a documentation room and one as office Ms. Logamani and Mr. Dharma Neethi. On the second floor you find the guest room for visitors or counseling with western bath and the important short stay room for women in emergency. They will find a protected home for themselves and their children as long as they need it. They will be save and get the help they need most. They also can use the kitchen and the bath attached to this room. On the roof is a new water tank and also much space to dry Spirulina and for the ones who want to enjoy the beautiful view.
With this letter I – in the name of myself and the WED Trust team – would like to say thank you for your generous donation, which has made possible the construction of this Short Stay House. The new building will be very useful for the important work of WED Trust. It gives women who are treated with violence the chance to have a place where they are safe and get the help they need. They have the possibility to get out of bad treatment and change their life. Hopefully more such houses are constructed in India in future.
With kind regards,
Sereina Spescha

SOCIO ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT OF GIRL CHILD FAMILIES

Introduction
Now a days female infanticide and terminate the female babe at the womb are becoming a global issue.  In consequence of this situation, female ratio is decreasing.  Getting son is prioritized and people have traditionally thought that male child is heir of the family, it would carry out the last ceremony include burial or fire the parents body and break the water pots.  By this ritual male child will help the parents to enter into heaven. They also believed that male child will look after the parents at the old age.  Families and local community have ill treated and subordinated the women because they viewed that women should go for her bridegroom’s home, extra luggage for the family.  People dislike for take women for marriage from the family with more daughters, thought that it is unsecured one.  So that they always dominate it, control over the women.  It brings house hold atrocities against them.  More women were separated from their marital families.  They were abused by worst words.  When the women trespass the male control after they have enjoyed much brutal treatments, men called her disobedient and mischief.  If they lost their parents, their male kins take over all their properties and assets.

Majority of the families have lost their pleasure when they got girl childbirth.  Mother delivered daughter never get respect from the community and family both of them have avoided and treated as unwanted.  Community calls it “heir less” and “root less” family.

Own brothers and other kins teased the family that was ashamed, hided their face before neighbors.

WED TRUST thought that the persons who are ignorant, unable to response the orthodoxy values and discouraged by the community members should be identified, removed darkness in their hearts, encouraged and counseled them for right development.

Aim

Uplift families having only girl children through awareness generation on gender equity, education, socio-economic and cultural changes.

Wall paintings on the Issue of Dowry

We work in the field of Human Rights and Women Empowerment in Usilampatti Taluk of Madurai District.  Violence against women such as female feticide, infanticide, dowry harassments, eve teasing and domestic violence are common in the rural area in Madurai district. Through wall painting at public places in the village, we educate rural people on the importance of giving assets to their daughters/sisters instead giving jewels, utensils and other movable assets that can be easily sold. The awareness generating picture has helped lot of women on human rights and raise voice against the dowry demands by her husbands. We want to continue to educating the people on Freedom from Dowry.
